What is Mindfulness?

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the practice of bringing your awareness and attention fully into the present moment, without judgment. It involves becoming softly aware of your thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, and surroundings with a sense of openness and curiosity.

What do Mindfulness-Based therapy sessions look like?

Mindfulness-based therapy sessions can take many forms. We’ll often start with a brief guided mindfulness medication, from there, our work together may include;

  • Breath work

  • Guided Visualization

  • Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) techniques

  • Mindful self-compassion (MSC) techniques

  • Mindfulness-Based Art Therapy

How Can Mindfulness-Based Therapy Help?

Mindfulness can help you break the cycle of worry, calm your stress response, and develop practical tools for managing anxiety, trauma, and unhelpful patterns.

Mindfulness focuses on being present and aware without judgment and with warmth, compassion, and gentleness toward yourself and others. It’s about approaching difficult emotions and experiences with a nurturing, friendly attitude.

Practicing mindfulness can reduce self-criticism, enhance compassion, improve impulse control, calm anxious thoughts, and strengthen your ability to stay grounded in the present moment.

My Mindfulness Training

As a Licensed Board-Certified Art Therapist with 20-years of mindfulness practice, and 16-years of clinical experience, my mindfulness journey began in 2006 at a Zen Buddhist meditation retreat in Japan—a transformative experience that sparked a lifelong passion for mindfulness.

Since then, I’ve completed an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course through Mindful Harlem and pursued advanced training in breath work and mindfulness-based art therapy through the Expressive Therapies Summit. I integrate yoga, breath work, and meditation into my daily life and have had the privilege of attending the Yoga and Science Conference with Deepak Chopra.

Mindfulness remains at the heart of both my personal and professional practice. I’ve also had the honor of teaching mindfulness skills to teens at the New York City Children’s Center, helping young people cultivate presence, self-awareness, and emotional regulation.
